iPhone Security To Be Patched By Weekend
Posted by Mike Yawney on July 31st, 2009 No comments
The BBC is reporting the security hole revealed by security expert Charlie Miller at Black Hat Thursday will be fixed by the weekend. UK carrier O2 claims a patch will be made available through iTunes as early as Saturday. It’s not clear if the patch will be made available elsewhere just yet. What we still don’t understand is why Apple still remains silent about the SMS vulnerability that allows someone to hijack your iPhone. Apple never acknowledged publicly there was a problem, and it sure as heck isn’t acknowledging a fix either.
Miller also noted Windows Mobile and Android operating systems also have security flaws. Google says it has already implemented a fix.

DSi Firmware Update: Facebook or Free Games
Posted by Mike Yawney on July 31st, 2009 No comments
Nintendo is forcing you to make a choice. Firmware 1.4 has just been released in Europe, Japan and Australia giving them access to Facebook. Good news right? Well not if your a pirate! Apparently the update also blocks the use of DSi compatible flashcarts. The firmware hasn’t hit North America yet, but rest assured it’s on its way. So it looks like Nintendo is forcing you to decide. Facebook, or free games…at least until another workaround is figured out.

Advertisers continue to come up with unique ways to catch your attention. There’s no denying this ad does just that.Procter and Gamble decided to take advantage of the “tangled” phone lines above the streets pf Bangkok. A green comb tangled amongst the lines (which happen to resemble strands of hair) which reads “Tangles? Switch to Rejoice Conditioners.”
Brilliant. Business Week has posted other unusual ads found around the globe. Click on the link to check out some of the more bizarre ones!

iPhone SMS Vulnerability To Be Revealed Today
Posted by Mike Yawney on July 30th, 2009 No comments
Earlier this month security expert Charlie Miller announced there was an SMS based security hole which could allow hackers to execute code at will. Since the announcement Apple has yet to make a move to try and fix the problem. Well that could very well change today.Miller is expected to announce the hack later today at Black Hat, a cyber security conference in Las Vegas. The exploit can be used to send a series of SMS bursts that can give a hacker complete power over any of the smart phone’s functions. We’re talking dialing, Web surfing, turning on the camera and microphone and send more text messages.

Nintendo Admits iPhone is Competition
Posted by Mike Yawney on July 30th, 2009 No comments
Whoa! We can’t believe our eyes or ears. Nintendo is admitting the iPhone is becoming serious competition for the DS!Today Nintendo reported it’s latest operating profit which showed a 66% decrease in revenue because of the “slowing demand for its Wii console and a stronger yen.” Don’t worry Nintendo still expects to sell 26 million Wii’s by years end. But the bigger shock was the admission the DS is not the only game in town. In fact the company stated DS sales are declining due to “increased competition in the handheld business from Apple’s iPhone.”
This marks the first time someone other than Apple has declared the iPhone as a true gaming platform.

Games To Movies, Books To Movies To Games
Posted by Sean Taylor on July 29th, 2009 No comments
Hollywood is busy turning games into the new comic books. After all, the first X-Men was one of the first (if not the first) comic book adaptation that wasn’t a total and complete suckfest and look where that went. Now, movie moguls are looking to games as a good jumping-off place, and while most have been gawdawful trash, one or two have been… alright.

Jailbreaking iPhones Could Crash Cell Towers
Posted by Mike Yawney on July 29th, 2009 No comments
Apple is warning all hell would break loose if people were legally permitted to “jailbreak” the iPhone. The Electronic Frontier Foundation is asking the Copyright Office to consider legalizing “jailbreaking”, where iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution by Apple. But Apple warns the end result could be “potentially catastrophic.â€
Apple says allowing jailbreaking could allow hackers to alter the iPhone’s BBP which enables a connection to cell phone towers. Once that connection is made…look out!
“A local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,†Apple states.

Microsoft Jumps in Bed With Yahoo
Posted by Mike Yawney on July 29th, 2009 No comments
And you thought Bing was going nowhere! A major announcement by the folks in Redmond today revealed Bing will now power search for both the Microsoft and Yahoo!
The deal gives Microsoft an exclusive 10 year license to Yahoo’s core search technology, while Microsoft’s Bing will be the exclusive algorithmic search and paid search platform for Yahoo! sites. Each company will maintain their own separate display advertising businesses and sales forces.
Does anyone use Yahoo! for searching anymore?
