• The “Cut My Sim” Device

Posted by Mike Yawney on May 29th, 2010 View Comments

So you just shelled out some big bucks and purchased an iPad 3G. Good work. Now all you need is a MicroSim card to fit inside. What’s that? You want to use your regular SIM card in your iPad? Not a problem.

Many iPad owners are simply modifying their old SIM cards but cutting them down to size to fit in an iPad has risks. One slip and you’ll be needing a new SIM card. So someone has come up with an easier way to do it, a SIM card cutter.

  • Gamers Suffer Fewer Nightmares

Posted by Natalie Sit on May 28th, 2010 View Comments

One more benefit of heavy gaming? Reduce incidences of waking up in the middle of the night screaming “El Diablo”!

According to researchers from Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Canada, heavy gamers have fewer nightmares, but when they do, they tend to be more violent than non-gamers. Jayne Gackenbach, a researcher with the study, found that gamers were more likely to lucid dream (where one is aware they are dreaming and and control what happens). She also found that, in these dreams, the perspective would change from first-person to a third-person view–an option common in many games.

“Gamers are used to controlling their game environments, so that can translate into dreams,” said Gackenbach.

Now this is quite comical. A child wrote this letter to the Institute of Physics, wanting to know a little more about the large “Hardon Collider”. Oh to be that young again when everything in the world is so innocent.

  • Apple working on a Next-Gen Apple TV

Posted by Mike Yawney on May 28th, 2010 View Comments

For those of you who thought Apple TV was dead…you’re wrong. Word on the street is Apple plans on bringing a new model to market, only this time with more features, and a lower price tag.

Engadget says a source very close to Apple has confirmed Apple TV generation 2 is in the works, and has been for some time. The device itself will be based on the architecture of the soon to be announced iPhone 4. Even the guts will be the same, including the A4 CPU and a limited 16GB to be exact. Why so small? Ah, cloud based storage my friend! The device is said to have only a power port and a video out port, other than that a clean design with no screen.

The real shocker has to be the price. $99. There we said it. A cool one hundred dollars for a device that will be capable of playing full 1080p video!

  • Japanese Robots Going To The Moon

Posted by DM Le Bray on May 28th, 2010 View Comments

Naturally, if Japan were to go to the moon, it would go with robots. There’s no word on if those robots will have alien monster-killing protocols, but robots are still cool in their own right.

The Japanese government has a $2.2 billion plan to set up a full moon base populated by humanoid robots by the year 2020. Surveying the moon would be the first objective of the base, but it will also be a solid foundation for Japan’s plans for further solar system exploration.

  • Firefox Almost On Your iPhone… Sort Of

Posted by DM Le Bray on May 27th, 2010 View Comments

Between work and home, there’s this hole in your life–the hole where Firefox should be. While there isn’t a full Firefox browser experience for the iPhone, Firefox Home is nearly here to fill the gap. The app will give instant access to your work or home Firefox browsing history, bookmarks and the set of tabs from your most recent browser session.

Mozilla gave the web a sneak peak into Firefox Home on the organization’s blog yesterday. Home is supposed to give users a “get up and go” way to use Firefox. More importantly, it’s free.

Mozilla’s development demo is after the break.

  • Nintendo Last (Again) In Greenpeace Ranking For Green Electronics

Posted by Natalie Sit on May 27th, 2010 View Comments

Nintendo has the dubious honour of being dead last in Greenpeace’s environmental rankings for electronic companies.

The Wii manufacturer scored 1.8 out of 10–a minuscule rise from last year’s ranking of 1.4. Its low ranking is due to the company not committing to removing PVC from its products as well as not honouring its promises to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. But Nintendo does score points for the energy efficiency of the AC adapter on the DSi and removing dangerous chemicals from its consoles.

  • Review: Super Mario Galaxy 2

Posted by Mike Yawney on May 27th, 2010 View Comments

Hard to believe it’s been almost three years since Mario last took to the stars. Super Mario Galaxy was a huge success for Nintendo, so it really didn’t come as a surprise to hear at last year’s E3 that a sequel was in the works. Now, one year later, we finally get our hands on the latest Mario game. Does it live up to our expectations? For the most part, yes.
