• The “Steve Jobs Hates You” Error Page

Posted by Mike Yawney on May 27th, 2010 View Comments

Apple doesn’t support Flash, that we know. It certainly doesn’t bode well for web developers out there who still use Flash. In fact some are so pissed at Apple’s decision to turn its back on Flash that they’ve decided to fight back.

SOSAppleSOS has created an error page which shows their dissatisfaction with Apple when people try and access Flash sites on their iPhone or iPad.  The page has Steve Jobs giving you the finger with the message “He doesn’t want you to see this sweet site on your Apple device. Check out my site on ANY other device or computer with Flash capabilities”.

  • BioWare Opens Up In Quaint Irish City

Posted by DM Le Bray on May 26th, 2010 View Comments

In a move that recognizes the massive customer base it has in Europe, Electronic Arts announced today plans to open up a BioWare studio in the city of Galway–”Ireland’s Cultural Heart”. If you want to work in the gaming industry and Guinness makes you happy, start tuning up the ol’ resume.

The new studio will be called the oh-so-exciting name of the Customer Center of Excellence and Network Operations Center. A key function of the studio will be supporting online games. Um… given that BioWare doesn’t currently have any online games in the market, that can only mean that Galway will play a significant role in supporting Star Wars: The Old Republic once the anticipated massively multiplayer online game is released in Spring 2011.

  • Rumour: Project Natal Out In October And With New Name

Posted by Natalie Sit on May 26th, 2010 View Comments

Project Natal will be in gamers’ hands, so to speak, this coming October.

A “trusted source” spoke to Edge Online that confirmed the motion controller from Microsoft will be debuting this October and will be bundled with the Xbox 360 Arcade for $299 USD. But if you want just the Natal, it could be $149 USD–much higher than the sub $100 USD price some European retailers boasted.

The Natal’s pricetag is higher than Sony’s Move–the PS3 producer’s attempt at a motion controller. The Move is expected to be less than $100 USD.

  • Foxconn Gets Employees to Sign Non-Suicide Pact

Posted by Mike Yawney on May 26th, 2010 View Comments

What do you do when your employees kill themselves because working conditions are allegedly bad? Well first you bring in Buddhist monks to ward off evil spirits. If that doesn’t work you bring in counsellors. And if that doesn’t work you get them to fill out a form promising they will not harm themselves, or sue the company if something bad was to go wrong. At least that’s what Foxconn has done.

The company which manufactures products for Apple, Dell, and Sony has sent out this contract seen on the right to all of its 400 thousand employees. It starts out by telling them they should contact the “worker Care Center Hotline” and talk to a councillor if any issues at work come up. It goes on to make employees promise they will not harm themselves or anyone else at the facility and reminds them if someone is injured on the job, dies, or is mutilated, the company will not pay more than it is regulated to.

  • Scientist Infects Self With Computer Virus

Posted by Mike Yawney on May 26th, 2010 View Comments

Strange but true! A British scientist claims he is the first human to ever become infected by a computer virus. Dr Mark Gasson from the University of Reading infected a small RFID chip with a computer virus, then inserted it into his hand.

Many of you may be asking why. Well RFID chips tend to ‘talk’ to other RFID chips and devices on the same network they are on. While conducting his test, Dr Grasson discovered the virus was  able to infect other RFID chips and computers with the virus that are on the same network.

The news is scary when you consider RFID tags are already replacing Medic Alert bracelets in the States. What would happen if someone tampered with one of those chips and infected the entire system? Would it be possible? You would hope security measures are in place.

Posted by DM Le Bray on May 25th, 2010 View Comments

Earlier today, Wal-Mart stores in the States halved the price of the iPhone 3GS–effective immediately. Chances are it’s not because uber-retailer felt the urge to give an amazing discount. With the iPhone 4G likely to be “officially” announced on June 7, this is more a matter of inventory movement than philanthropy.

The discounted price requires that users sign up for the standard 2-year contract with AT&T. Of course, if you want the non-subsidized price of $297 which is only slightly cheaper than the $299 price of the phone at Apple stores.
