• Arcade Fire And Chrome Make Best. Video. Evar.

Posted by DM Le Bray on August 31st, 2010 View Comments

The music video has come a long way since I was staying up late at a friend’s place to watch The Odds on MuchMusic. In fact, one could say this mode of music marketing has struggled to be relevant now that MTV hardly does music videos anymore. But the latest mix of online greatness (Arcade Fire, Chrome, and HTML5) has given us a glimpse into a likely future for the music video–a personalized, interactive experience.

“The Wilderness Downtown” is an interactive film by writer/director Chris Milk. It starts by asking you to input the address of your childhood home (hopefully available on Google Maps and Street View). As the multi-window video begins, it shows shots of your street matched with images of animated birds, trees, and a running man. Trust me, it’s worth checking out for yourself.

  • Brand New Xbox 360 Controller

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 31st, 2010 View Comments

Microsoft has just announced a brand new controller for the Xbox 360. At first glance it looks roughly the same as previous versions, but take a close look at the A, B, X, Y buttons. The red, green, yellow and blue colours are gone, replaced with grey monochrome. The analog sticks are also now more concave, another small upgrade. But the biggest improvement has to be the D-Pad.

Microsoft claims many Xbox 360 users complained the D-Pad was awkward to use. So the engineers in Redmond developed a new one. A twist of the D pad will make the plus pop up giving the disc some dimension. Take a look at the picture below.

  • A Hand In Liquid Nitrogen–Results May Vary

Posted by DM Le Bray on August 30th, 2010 View Comments

Remember that first season episode on the X-Files where the bad guy shoved a scientist’s head in liquid nitrogen with smashing results? That’s kinda what one would expect to see if someone were to put their unprotected hand in liquid nitrogen. But Theodore Gray of PopSci has shown that your hand can be protected by science (just please don’t do this at home).

In a demonstration of the Leidenfrost effect–in which one’s hand is protected by natural bubbles–Gray plunged his hand into an unshielded dewar of the freezing (-320° F) fluid. The video (after the break) is amazing to behold… and the shots of disposing of liquid nitrogen on a lake is cool to see too!

Times are a changing. Oxford University Press, the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary, says the next edition of its dictionary may be online only.

OUP claims since 1989 (the year the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was released) only 30,000 print copies have been sold. That’s it! Only 30,000 copies. Compare that to the publisher’s subscription based ($295 a year) online version which gets 2 million hits a month.

Industry insiders say Google has been in talks with major studios for the past few months but have really started ramping up discussions over the past week. That of course is probably due to Apple’s anticipated announcement this week of a follow-up to the infamous Apple TV.

  • iBottleOpener A Party In Your Pocket?

Posted by DM Le Bray on August 29th, 2010 View Comments

There’s nothing more unsettling than a missing bottle opener. The next thing you know, you’re looking at every hard surface as a potential tool and considering how it might be ok to break said bottle and just pour the contents into a glass.

That’s why I always keep one in my desk at the office. Or perhaps it’s why you’ve spent years perfecting popping off a cap using your eye socket. It’s likely why Lightbulb Moments created the iBottleopener.

This hard shell two-piece slider case features a metal bottle opener element on the back. That certainly makes it functional, but do you really want to be opening a bottle of liquid with your iPhone? You can see it in action (“yeah, buddy… a party in your pocket”) after the break.
