  • First Sonar Image of the Titanic

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 29th, 2010 View Comments

The image you see above is the first sonar image taken of the Titanic. This is a bird’s eye view of the Titanic’s bow which shows the mast, superstructure, openings for the one and two funnels, as well as the Grand Staircase.

The new expedition currently underway to map and photograph the historic wreck like never before has just started, but it’s already revealing some interesting info. To start, the debris field is much larger than previously thought.

  • Chemistry Crayons

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 29th, 2010 View Comments

Pine Green, Piggy Pink, Royal Purple. Forget what you know about Crayola Crayon Colours. A crafty Etsy user in Fargo, North Dakota (there’s apparently not much to do in Fargo) has renamed 48 different Crayons with the chemicals used to create the colour.

  • PC Maker Lenovo Making Game Console For China

Posted by Natalie Sit on August 28th, 2010 View Comments

I’d never peg China as the next place for console development. Lenovo, China’s largest PC manufacturer, is planning a gaming console. The console is being developed by eedoo Technology, a Beijing company, which Lenovo owns.

The eBox, following the trend of Xs and midcapping, will be able to connect to the Internet. But the biggest bandwagon its jumping on is the motion control. eBox won’t have any physical controllers but rely on physical gestures. Look for this console at the end of the year, and perhaps across Asia and overseas markets later.

  • Apple’s 6th Gen iPod Nano?

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 28th, 2010 View Comments

Apple is getting ready to make a major announcement on Wednesday. Right now all signs point towards the announcement of new generations of iPods, and maybe even a new version of Apple TV. But we could be gettng a sneak peek at one of Apple’s announcements today.

According to AppleInsider, the photo above could very well could be what Apple’s 6th gen iPod Nano looks like. Yes, looks more like a shuffle than a Nano! The new Nano is supposedly even smaller than previous Nano’s (width) but still retains Apple’s traditional 30-pin dock connector. It also has a 3cm by 3cm screen. No word on whether it’s a touchscreen, but a screen this small may make it nearly impossible to navigate.

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 28th, 2010 View Comments

An interesting new case has surfaced online for the iPhone 4. It’s a crystal clear case which supports dual SIM cards.

USBfever has just posted the case on its website. It claims it can reduce network frustration while traveling from one country to another with your phone. It also allows you to use a full sized SIM card, helpful for those who don’t want to hack up their card to make it fit inside Apple’s latest handset.

  • Facebook Apparently Owns The Word “Book”

Posted by Natalie Sit on August 27th, 2010 View Comments

Time for another Facebook controversy. The social networking site claims that the suffix “book” is theirs and theirs alone.

Facebook is suing Teachbook.com, an online community for teachers. Besides griping about little troublemaker Billy, teacher can swap lesson plans and other education resources at this site. In a world of shrinking school budgets, this seems like a handy for teacher.

Why is Facebook suing an seemingly innocuous website?

  • Lots Of People Making Gmail Phone Calls

Posted by Natalie Sit on August 27th, 2010 View Comments

A couple of days ago we posted a story about Google adding phone calls to Gmail. Guess how many calls were made in 24 hours? A lot. Like 1 million.

According to Google’s official Twitter account “Over 1,000,000 calls placed from Gmail in just 24 hours!” One hand that’s impressive given the feature is slowly rolling out to users but there are 175 million Gmail users.

  • Sony Temporarily Blocks Sale of PS3 Modchip

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 27th, 2010 View Comments

Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has won a small albeit temporary victory against console hackers. The company has been granted a temporary injunction by the nation’s Federal Court to block the importation and sale of the new PS3 modchips known as the PSJailbreak.

Last week the USB device was unveiled to the world. The manufacturer claims the PSJailbreak allows you to backup games right to the PS3′s hard drive then play them without a disc. Although very few modchips have made their way into the hands of gamers, there has already been some discussion that Sony is able to detect the device and can ban consoles that have used the PSJailbreak.

  • Blockbuster Filing For Bankruptcy?

Posted by Mike Yawney on August 27th, 2010 View Comments

Struggling with a one billion dollar debt load, Blockbuster Video is expected to file for Bankruptcy next month. The Los Angeles Times is reporting sources have confirmed the company has entered private meetings with the six major movie studios to discuss their intention to enter a “pre-planned” bankruptcy in mid-September.

The paper says the company will use the time in Chapter 11 to restructure, possibly closing 500 of its 3,425 stores in the U.S. No word on whether Canada will be affected, but since the stores still remain profitable north of the border, chances are Canadian stores won’t be affected.
