    Minecraft: The Next Obsession

See kids? This could happen to you! All you have to do is quit your day job, take some inspiration from classic games, add some hard work and voila! Minecraft isn’t even out of its Alpha stage yet, but the Swedish developer behind the phenomenon has been turning down jobs from industry leaders like Valve and Bungie, only to turn around and pour some of his acquired millions (that’s right… millions) back into his own brand new independent studio.

So you might be asking… what the hell is Minecraft?

  • New Batman: Arkham City Interrogation Mode

Posted by Sean Taylor on September 30th, 2010 View Comments

Batman’s ‘Detective Mode’ in Batman: Arkham Asylum was a well implemented, if underused, game mechanic allowing you some in-depth analysis of the game’s many crime scenes. Rocksteady Studios is stepping it up in the sequel, allowing you to interrogate specific thugs to grab some new info and beat some of those harder Riddler puzzles… yes, the Riddler apparently made it out of Asylum.

Click through for more info, new features, and more unauthorized screengrabs.

  • Girl’s Lip Bitten Off by Dog While Playing Nintendogs

Posted by Mike Yawney on September 30th, 2010 View Comments

Nintendog’s is probably one of the most child safe games available on the Nintendo DS. Just don’t play it in front of a real dog.

9 year-old Megan Walker was dragged off the couch by a Bull Mastiff while playing the game at a friend’s house. Her virtual dog let out a bark which apparently sent the real life dog named Saracen into a frenzy. The animal dragged the girl from the couch and bit her face several times before biting off her upper lip.

  • US Astronomers Discover Potentially Habitable Planet; Earth’s Inhabitants Trade In ‘The Old Model’

Posted by Sean Taylor on September 29th, 2010 View Comments

Don’t ignite that tire fire in your backyard just yet folks. Astronomers have discovered a planet that straddles the ‘habitable zone’ in a solar system adjacent to ours. It is Earth-sized (check), the perfect distance from its Sun (check), and its mass suggests it should be able to hold onto an atmosphere and support liquid water (double-check). Alright all you environmentalists out there: time to get a real job.

The planet, which astronomers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the Carnegie Institution of Washington discovered, is named Gliese 581g (the ‘g’ stands for Great!), has a mass 3 to 4 times the size of Earth (more parking) and has an orbital period of just under 37 days (just like your last girlfriend).

In all seriousness, this is humanity’s first best chance at wrecking another one.

Posted by Mike Yawney on September 29th, 2010 View Comments

People still send snail mail! As ridiculous as it sounds it’s true!  Pingdom has put together the infograph above showing how much email Americans send compared to regular email. No surprise, most of it is spam! The stats are interesting. We’ll just let it speak for itself.

  • Nintendo Predicting Astronomical 3DS Launch

Posted by Sean Taylor on September 29th, 2010 View Comments

We’re not saying that Nintendo might be jumping the gun a bit, and we know that’s a global target that they’re forecasting, but forgive us for thinking that 4 million total sales in 30 days sounds a bit like hubris. Especially for a product launch in March.

The new 3D-glasses-less handheld, coming early next year to Japan, then North America & Europe, has an MSRP of ¥25,000 ($298/£188) in Japan but has yet to be priced for other territories. This is going to make quite a difference whether or not many gamers are grabbing theirs on Days 1-through-30.

  • Nintendo 3DS Hits Japan in February, North America in March

Posted by Mike Yawney on September 29th, 2010 View Comments

Nintendo has now made it official: it’s new 3D handheld will hit Japan on February 26th 2011, coming to North America shortly after in March.

Like the Nintendo DS, the 3DS  features two screens. However, the new handheld will feature a top screen capable of displaying 3D graphics without the use of 3D glasses. We’ve see it ourselves and have to say it looks pretty good. Besides 3D capabilities, another cool feature is the ability for the 3DS to automatically create a Mii just by scanning your face with the built-in camera.

  • AppleTV Jailbroken Via Shatter

Posted by Natalie Sit on September 28th, 2010 View Comments

In a non-surprising twist, the AppleTV has been jailbroken. The hack, named Shatter,  allows you to install apps onto your AppleTV.

Shatter first unlocked the new iPod Touch, but because the AppleTV uses a version of iOS, it wasn’t much trouble to jailbreak it. The hack uses a firmware restore download and the file is an iPSW file which is a file extension iPhone and iPad OS.
