  • Wokka Wokka Wokka: Pac-Man Notebooks

Posted by Natalie Sit on September 27th, 2010 View Comments

Allow me to be old for a second.

When I was your age, the only video game characters I had on my binder were the ones I drew… with a burnt stick… uphill… both ways. But now it’s 2010 and you can buy a swanky new Moleskine with the iconic yellow circle.

Moleskine revealed some sweet Pac-Man themed notebooks. It’s your choice of the thinner notebooks, the standard hardcovers, or the larger hardcovers. Or you can collect all three types in a set. Sadly, it’s all sold out.

  • Google Guilty For Suggesting Man A Rapist

Posted by DM Le Bray on September 27th, 2010 View Comments

A French court has found Google guilty of defamation because the search engine suggested a man was both a “satanist” and a “rapist”. Yeah, I can understand how those aren’t the words you’d like to see when you type your name into the search field.

It turns out that Google’s argument that Google Suggest is only recommending popular search terms does not hold water in said French court. So it doesn’t matter that our plaintiff “had been convicted on appeal to a three-year jail sentence for corruption of a minor, a conviction that was not yet definitive” and that other people in France had obviously searching his name against these nasty terms–nope, it’s Google’s fault for letting it continue.

As expected Research in Motion unveiled its tablet to the world. But what wasn’t expected was the name. Many were convinced the tablet would be called the BlackPad, instead RIM is calling it PlayBook.

  • Vegas Hotel Unintentionally “Singes” Guests

Posted by Mike Yawney on September 27th, 2010 View Comments

Vegas hotels are known for their wacky attractions, but Vdara Hotel Resort and Hotel is drawing a lot of attention from something even the architects didn’t plan.

When the sun shines on the south tower, it’s reflected down onto the pool deck creating what staff there are calling the “death ray”. A 10 foot by 15 foot beam of lights weeps across the pool area each day, which is hot enough to melt a plastic bag. In fact some sunbathers have claimed the death ray has singed their hair.

Tale a look at the photo of a plastic bag below which was left on the pool deck as the “death ray” passed over.

  • Ashton Kutcher Has Little Twitter Influence

Posted by Mike Yawney on September 26th, 2010 View Comments

He has almost 5.9 million followers and was once referred to as The King of Twitter, but does Ashton Kutcher’s popularity on the social network have any real impact on Twitter? It appears it doesn’t.

A new study out of Northwestern University used mathematical algorithms to determine how influential Ashton Kutcher really was online. Turns out he’s not. Of the 6000+ tweets from Kutcher very few actually started topics.

Researchers say that was the case for almost all celebrity Twitter users. Even teen sensation Justin Bieber (ya we don’t get it either) has very little influence on Twitter. The same goes for Lady Gaga who has 6.5 million followers. Big names don’t translate into influence on Twitter.

  • 8-Bit Woodcraft To Class Up Your Joint

Posted by DM Le Bray on September 25th, 2010 View Comments

Woodcraft is a classic folk art, so why not apply it to classic video games as well? Jeff Swenty has done it by combining his artistic hobby with his career in the game industry.

From Contra to Pitfall! and Space Invaders, Swenty cuts out “thousands of little blocks of wood, stain[s] them, glue[s] them together, seal[s] them and then hang[s] the result on the wall”. You might need to take a step back to get a good look at this 8BitWood, but the outcome of each project is pretty dang cool. Oh, and did I mention you can buy some yourself?

  • The Strange McDonald’s Toy That’s Sweeping Taiwan

Posted by Mike Yawney on September 25th, 2010 View Comments

It’s no secret those plastic little toys thrown into McDonald’s Happy Meals are just cheap pieces of junk, probably worth just a few cents. I should know, my house is littered with them. Yet the toy pictured above has become one of the most wanted toys in Taiwan.

If you’re a fan of anime you may recognize the face. It’s Sasuke from Naruto. A flick of the switch on his back is supposed to enable him to do a back flip. The truth is it doesn’t work. But that’s not his best feature. The real draw here is what he can do with his head.
