Ask The Crew: Who’s Your Favourite Video Game Couple?
Posted by Natalie Sit on February 6th, 2010 No commentsDuos are prevalent in video games. You’ve got your couples going on their diamond anniversary–Mario and Peach–or couples just starting out like Salem and Rios from Army of Two. You can’t see one without thinking of the other.
With February 14 just around the corner, we’re feeling the romance in the air. So who’s your favourite video game couple?
CJ and Catalina – GTA: San Andreas
And with that, Catalina captured my heart as the most fun female headcase in the GTA universe. Sure, she’s full of the crazy and a violent, uncontrolled murderer, but she was just the right romantic foil for CJ, you know? A little bit of BDSM and homicidal rampage was good for CJ’s character development and added some spice to the low point of the plot. Plus, it gave us some more insight into the woman who would become (to date) the only female antagonist in the GTA games: Claude’s betraying girlfriend in GTA III.
What? Not romantic enough for you and your Valentine’s sensibilities? Suck it up, princess… the question wasn’t about the most functional or healthy couple in video games.
If only we could resurrect Catalina (yeah, she died in an exploding helicopter… way to go, Claude) for a future GTA and give her the chance for more turbulent romance coupled with awesome craziness.

Link and Zelda
There is no denying this power couple. Link and Zelda have been through some tough times in their 13-year relationship.Yet through thick and thin there is still a spark between them. Which is quite amazing really since they rarely get to spend quality time alone. Link always seems to be on a never-ending quest to save her. It’s hard to believe the two have been in 16 different games together, and yet all we’ve seen is Zelda give Link a small peck on the cheek. Then again has Mario received much more from Princess Peach?

Niko and Roman Bellic – GTA IV
One’s a dreamer, the other’s realist. One loves the American titties, the other couldn’t care less. And one’s hopeless around violence while that’s all the other has. Cousins Niko and Roman Bellic wouldn’t be your normal pick for an article like this.Their relationship is one among many enjoyable things about GTA. Niko is always fixing Roman’s screwups. Roman tries to stop Niko from sinking into a deep dark depression by taking him to strip bars. These two have only each other in this new world, miles away from their homeland.
I know their relationship doesn’t always end in the best way. Depending on your choice near the conclusion of the story, Roman could wind up dead. But like all good love affairs, there’s always some tragedy. And if tragic relationships were good enough for Shakespeare, they’re good enough for me.
