Apple breaks its tradition of 99 cent songs

Oh Apple, how could you?! Bowing to pressure from the record labels, Apple has announced it will raise the price for songs on it’s uber popular music service.  Starting April 7th, many hit singles and selected classic tracks will cost $1.29. It’s a move that’s creating plenty of controversy.

“This will be a PR nightmare,” predicted former EMI Music executive Ted Cohen. “It is for the music industry what the AIG bonuses are for the insurance industry.”

While the announcement hasn’t been made public, many record labels have already received letters from Apple announcing the change in pricing. Songs will be offered in three different price ranges, 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29. The price will depend on the popularity of the track.

On a positive note, music sold at the new prices will be offered free of anti-piracy software, enabling the buyer to make unlimited copies and play the songs on any device. This is an option that is currently not available.

What do you think? Are you willing to pay Apple more for DRM free music?
