In a non-surprising twist, the AppleTV has been jailbroken. The hack, named Shatter,  allows you to install apps onto your AppleTV.

Shatter first unlocked the new iPod Touch, but because the AppleTV uses a version of iOS, it wasn’t much trouble to jailbreak it. The hack uses a firmware restore download and the file is an iPSW file which is a file extension iPhone and iPad OS.

According to a member of the Shatter Dev Team Will Strafach, the new AppleTV OS is mix of the old AppleTV OS and iOS. That means existing AppleTV hacks could work. Those hacks are known was frappliances and add more features to your AppleTV. So, for example, if you could hook up a camera you could enable video conferencing.

Strafach also drops a tantalizing hint: in the AppleTV OS, all the binaries are marked as iPad-compatible and he wonders what Apple could do with that. Hmm…
