The gauntlet has been thrown and three guys from Edson, Alberta, Canada (pop. 8365) are out to break the Guinness World Record for consecutive hours played on a first person shooter. The current record, held by the UK-based “Frag Dolls”, is 24 hours and four minutes—the Edson trio plan to blow that away by at least doubling the time.

“After coming across the record in the Guinness Book of World Records Gamer’s Edition,” said Jory Keen, spokesperson for the team, “we decided we should beat it just because we could…. just for the fun of it.”

The team of friends (Keen, Trent Halliwell, and Travis Hicks) play under the handle of Greater Than or GT. Starting at 4 p.m. on Friday, November 20, they aim to play Halo 3 for more than 48 consecutive hours. No sleep, just game.

Guinness rules for the record-breaking attempt allow for a five-minute break per hour of complete gameplay. Breaks can be accumulated. For example, after four hours, the team would be afforded a 20-minute break. But, for the team to qualify for the record, they must always have one person playing at a time.

“[Halo 3 is] the only game that all three of us really enjoy playing for great lengths of time,” said Keen. He also had a few thoughts on how GT might keep themselves awake:

“We’re planning on sleeping until about an hour before the event to be as rested as possible. We’ll be bringing some stuff with us to keep us up too; things like energy drinks/other “energy” products, (I will personally be drinking Diet Pepsi and Amp energy drinks like they’re going out of style) possibly some air horns, most likely a box of food to keep us going… The three of us have also stated to each other that if we see anyone starting to pass out they get punched in the face.”

The trio will likely spend most of the time playing team battle rifles “on anything but Isolation”. They will be playing online and welcome anyone who wants to track them down.

Beyond the thrill of landing a world record, Keen and GT are raising money for the Edmonton Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“We knew the event would draw a lot of attention and we wanted to us that attention for a good cause,” said Keen.

For those who will actually be in Edmonton, Alberta on the weekend of November 20, you can check out the record-breaking attempt at Apocalypse Gaming downtown in the chilly capital city.

Guinness requires two witnesses at all times to validate the record and the team is still asking for local volunteers through their website.

So we definately conquered the record this weekend. We ended up finishing at 40 hours and 10 minutes of gameplay, which was a bit short of our goal, but still a long ass time. We’ve raised around $1000 so far, and hope to have more. Thanks for all the support, and we’ll be sure to let you know when Guinness sends us our fancy piece of paper telling us how badass we are.
