• Fable III Drops XP–Are You “Pissed Off”?

Last week we told you about how Lionhead bigwig Peter Molyneux was building buzz for a Fable III announcement by saying that the news would make people “super pissed off”. Short of dropping your companion doggy, we weren’t quite sure what he meant. But now we know that the bomb is that the latest Fable installment will forsake the standard experience and health bars of traditional role playing games.

According the Molyneux, the loss of XP just makes sense because, “most people didn’t really understand it [XP].” And with so many successful games, such as the Bioshock and Mass Effect franchises, that combine action adventure with RPG elements while dropping the XP and health bars, the change isn’t such a big leap.

Personally, I’m not surprised at this change for Fable III. The second game in the series did feel like RPG-lite, focusing more on the adventure with RPG environment. I won’t miss the XP or health bar at all.

But maybe I’m reading this wrong and maybe people truly are “pissed off” at this change. What irks me, actually, is that this announcement feels it was more hype than real game-changing innovation for Fable. Yet is has still succeeded in making me look forward to Fable III later this year.
