• Full Control Of The No-Touch Faucet

No, this is not the same as a motion-activated water faucet. Designer Jasper Dekker has created a faucet that responds to different gestures to give the user hot or cold water, differing flow volumes, and the choice of a shower spray or a single stream.

Each gesture corresponds to what the user wants. For example, a wave of the hand up the left side of the faucet is a “pull” of hot water out of the faucet. The faster you make the motion, the more water you’re going to get. Move your hand back in the opposite direction and it’s like you’re pushing the water back to shut off the flow.

Dekker’s prototype faucet uses two arrays of infra-red distance sensors to recognize the hand gestures. The rest is a complicated homemade water control system of servos, tubing and valves.

Something like this is all about the hygiene. Sure, a motion-activated spout stops us from putting our grimy hands all over everything, but it’s just not specific enough in its output. Now here’s a product that understands we sometimes want water that’s “just right” on our sensitive skin.
