Futuristic Stadium Unveiled for 2014 Olympic Games

The Beijing National Aquatics Center was truly a sight to behold during the recent 2008 Olympic Games. Nicknamed the Water Cube, it was a building unlike many had seen before. Now it looks as though the 2014 Olympic Games will introduce us to yet another odd, yet hitech stadium.
The yet to be named eco-friendly stadium has been designed by design firm Populous for the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia. The shell looks almost like a cross between a turtle and a butterfly. The translucent crystalline skin is meant to represent the “color and spectacle of the games when illuminated at nightâ€Â. Here’s what the designers are saying:
“The main stadium design, in addition to the venue overlay plan we have prepared for the 2014 Games, delivers a wonderful vision for the winter Olympics, and a lasting sustainable legacy for Sochi. Its sweeping form responds to both its coastal location and mountainous backdrop, whilst its crystalline skin engages with its surroundings by day, and provides an iconic representation of the colour and spectacle of the games when illuminated at night.†said John Barrow, Populous senior principal.
Populous has not yet presented any of the green features of the stadium.
