• GSM Encryption Code Cracked

encryptionMost of the world’s cell phone calls happen on GSM (global system for mobile communication) networks protected by an algorithm. That algorithm is a whopping 21 years-old. Now after two decades of use, a German computer engineer has cracked the code and posted it online for everyone to see.

“This shows that existing G.S.M. security is inadequate,” 28 year-old Karsten Nohl, told about 600 people attending the Chaos Communication Congress, a four-day conference of computer hackers that is happening in Berlin. “We are trying to push operators to adopt better security measures for mobile phone calls.”

Earlier this year Nohl reached out to hackers asking for help to crack the GSM code. 24 responded and worked together to reproduce code , making deciphering of cell calls possible.

The G.S.M. Association, the industry group based in London is crying foul of course, questioning Nohl’s purpose for publishing the code. Yet at the same time the group which established the algorithm says someone actually using the code for devious purposes “is theoretically possible but practically unlikely.”

Two years ago a newer version of the algorithm was introduced with 128-bit encryption, but most wireless carriers have yet to adopt it since it will cost too much money.
