• Is That An N64 In Your Pocket?

The name came to creator Downing through a Super Mario RPG reference

It might not be “pocket” sized, but the Nimbus 64 is a very portable and practically official-looking mod for your old N64. Sprung from the mind of one “Downing”, the Nimbus 64 will let you play GoldenEye on the go like you always wanted to.

And none of that “you-could-have-just-got-an-emulated-version-of-the-game-for-your-actual-portable-device” crap. There’s something warm and fuzzy about playing the real deal while on the morning commute.

    The Vrge64

This is Downing’s second N64 mod. His first, the VrgeN64, was much more “black box” in its design. The Nimbus feels like Nintendo tinkered with a portable edition of the console before moving on to the GameCube.

Downing made the beauty out of a custom vacuum-formed case and borrowed buttons and control sticks from actual Nintendo controllers.

For those considering making their own, here’s his full list of components that he described in the BenHeck.com Forums:

    1-Custom Vacuum Formed Case
2-Game Cube Controllers for Control Stick and D-Pad
    2-Packs of Copper Heat Sinks
    2-PTH08080WAZ
    1-Nintendo 64 System w/Expansion Pack
    1-Zenith PS1 Screen w/Speakers
    50-Tact Switches
    1-3-Pin On/Off Switch
    1-7.4v, 4700mAh li-polymer battery
1-SuperPad Plus for Control Board and A,B,Z,C’s,R and L buttons
    1-Type M Charging Port
    1-A/V Out Switch
    1-Controller Port For Memory Card
    1-Expansion Pack
    1-Duel Headphone Jack
Plus, various wire, solder, 2.2k Resistors, 100uf Radial Capacitors, hardware, ABS Cement/Adhesives, Abrasives and so on

Thank you guys so much for your review! It’s nice to see some take and make they’re own write up vs what seems to be the standard copy and past routine! And thanks for backing me up against the “why don’t your run emulated versions on PSP” idiots! Like I said, go ahead, I just like building them! But thanks again!

Thanks, Downing. Keep on building them and we’ll be keen to have a look. Once again: well done!
