• Jailbreaking iPhones Could Crash Cell Towers

cell_towerApple is warning all hell would break loose if people were legally permitted to “jailbreak” the iPhone.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is asking the Copyright Office to consider legalizing “jailbreaking”, where iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution by Apple. But Apple warns the end result could be “potentially catastrophic.”

Apple says allowing jailbreaking could allow hackers to alter the iPhone’s BBP which enables a connection to cell phone towers. Once that connection is made…look out!

“A local or international hacker could potentially initiate commands (such as a denial of service attack) that could crash the tower software, rendering the tower entirely inoperable to process calls or transmit data,” Apple states.

The EFF isn’t buying Apple’s story adding if that was the case, the open-source Android phone would also pose a threat.

Hmmm, does Apple want to make sure it has complete controls of Apps with it’s closed business model?
