Playstation Home: Too l33t for the Street

Sony announced today that it has hit the 10,000,000 user milestone on its very first birthday. One year later, Sony is repositioning the online hub as a social networking platform, saying that their newly branded gaming spaces for Uncharted 2 and the latest Rachet & Clank allows developers to “showcase their products and creativity to their core audience”.

I don’t know about you, but, knowing the Playstation brand and many of its loyalists, I find it hard to believe that people are really picking up on this whole Home thing. Sure, I logged on once (which means that I’m considered a ‘user’), took the tour, changed my outfit, played with some Red Bull model planes and saw there was really nothing there. The whole experience seemed to scream “WE’RE MARKETING OUR GAME!” right in your face.

Granted, Home is only a year old and still has a lot of growing pains to experience, but the recent news that they’re going to start charging cash for certain things (which we all knew in our hearts was going to happen eventually) is kind of a downer.

Do you go on Home? How many times total? Daily? Please enlighten me as to what I’m missing. I’ll log on to Home tonight and post my impressions in the comments, so if you have anything inspiring to say… make it quick.

Alright… After 1 system update, then a Home update, then loading my character, then downloading region info… the PS3 dropped the signal and kicked me out of Home. They don’t make it easy but I’ll try again tomorrow.
