Print Version of Oxford English Dictionary Soon to be History?Posted by Mike Yawney on August 30th, 2010 View Comments
Times are a changing. Oxford University Press, the publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary, says the next edition of its dictionary may be online only.
OUP claims since 1989 (the year the latest edition of the Oxford English Dictionary was released) only 30,000 print copies have been sold. That’s it! Only 30,000 copies. Compare that to the publisher’s subscription based ($295 a year) online version which gets 2 million hits a month.
Of course there’s a reason not many print copies have sold. The complete Oxford English Dictionary hardback set costs $1,165 and weighs an incredible 130 pounds.
Don’t panic bookworms, the change over won’t happen overnight. Oxford University Press says the third edition of the Oxford English Dictionary won’t be ready for publication for at least another 10 years.
