Word ran around the web pretty quickly today about the unannounced reveal that the latest in Capcom’s long-running Resident Evil franchise is dropping on Xbox 360 and PS3 just in time for holiday impalement this year with the PC version to follow.

Many outlets are reporting that the story will follow not just Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield, both of whom have partners to team up with, but a third unnamed playable character (not Ada Wong, but she’ll be in there playable later) and will be a globe-trotting experience not simply situated in one locale like many (many) of the games before it. All three player characters will be available from the outset and players can switch between storylines whenever they feel like it. Eventually, they all get together for a group hug, presumably.

Jump past the break for the official trailer featuring President Zombie!

The title is being developed internally at Capcom and the team is “aiming for a cross between the action/horror blend of Resident Evil 4 … and the far more action-oriented Resident Evil 5.” The trailer certainly hints at a more visceral Resident Evil with quite a few punishing martial-arts moves, but that could just be a look at the close-quarters moves that first starting appearing in Resident Evil 4. And hey who’s that!?! It looks like Leon will get a second chance at putting the moves on the president’s daughter once again.

All in all, we’re pretty impressed they’ve managed to keep it under wraps this long, even after a Gamestop employee outed the new title after seeing some promotional material making the rounds.

Great trailer! And we’re excited to see that the game is set in major metro areas for maximum carnage. Can’t wait to play it on the show floor at E3 this year!
