Abs, boobs, pouts and smiles… there are just so many options when choosing the successful online dating profile picture. Whether in the bar or on the ‘Net, if you’re trying to pick up, you have to pay attention to that superficial visual first impression. But is there any sure-fire way to attract the most interest?

Some fascinating data mining from OkCupid, an online dating site, is making it that much easier to make the perfect profile pic. Sadly, in only reinforces that sex really does sell and that the stupid “MySpace Shot” (taken by women holding the camera above the head) is just to damn effective to ever go away.

So if you’re looking to snag some love online, here are some helpful hints from the research:

    • Eye contact leads to success for women (IE: men like it), but men can get away without staring into the camera
    • The “MySpace Shot” actually works… dramatically well (for women only, please)
    • Flirty faces and smiles work nicely for women, but men should just stick to smiling
    • Cleavage and abs still spell success, duh.
    • Men, posting a picture of you with an animal is all good. Women, guys don’t care if you love your kitteh.
    • Do something interesting and informational in the shot: play guitar, skydive, scuba, pose with your Lord of the Rings toy collection, etc.

So now that  you know all the secrets to success, go out there and nab yourself a mate with a photo you’ll never want to show your children.
