• Sony Removes Linux Support From PS3

Sony will be removing the ability to install Linux on your Playstation 3. If you’ve taken a close look at your XMB on your PS3 you may have noticed the “Install Other OS” option. Ya, expect that to disappear.

SCEA’s Patrick Seybold explains that the removal of said functionality is necessary “due to security concerns … [and] will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.”

As we told you a few weeks back, there are claims out there the Playstation 3 has been hacked. Clearly Sony is concerned about the developments or it wouldn’t take this measure.

The “Install Other OS” option has already been removed from the PS3 Slim consoles. Expect it to disappear from the Phat consoles with the new 3.21 firmware update which will be released on April 1st.

We should point out, if you already have Linux installed on your PS3, Sony isn’t going to force you to take the update. You will however lose a few features, including the ability to sign into the Playstation network, and the playing of games that require the new firmware update.
