Sony Computer Entertainment Australia has won a small albeit temporary victory against console hackers. The company has been granted a temporary injunction by the nation’s Federal Court to block the importation and sale of the new PS3 modchips known as the PSJailbreak.

Last week the USB device was unveiled to the world. The manufacturer claims the PSJailbreak allows you to backup games right to the PS3′s hard drive then play them without a disc. Although very few modchips have made their way into the hands of gamers, there has already been some discussion that Sony is able to detect the device and can ban consoles that have used the PSJailbreak.

The current injunction blocks Australian companies from importing and selling the chips until August 31st.  Distributors also have to turn over all chips in stock to Sony’s solicitors who will hold onto them until the deadline passes.
