Sony has announced two new series of Walkmans, the S and the E. Both are similar in design with a few new features.

The S series stands out from previous models as it now sports built-in speakers, so users can share their music out loud! Oh joy.

“By outfitting this Walkman with internal speakers, we feel that we are adding a new social element to the world of digital music and video,” said Naoki Sugaya, product manager for Walkman® in the Audio Division of Sony Canada.  “Consumers now have a fast, simple and easy solution for sharing their personal music and video library with others.”

The S Series features a high-contrast 2.4-inch QVGA LCD screen, video playback, voice recording and FM recording capabilities. It also claims to have exceptionally long battery life, with up to 42 hours of music playback and up to 6.5 hours of video playback through the headphones. Battery life will diminish however if you use the speakers, up to 17 hours of music playback and up to 5 hours of video playback.

The new Sony S Series Walkman® video MP3 player will be available in black, red, and violet and in capacities of 8 GB and 16 GB.  Both the 8GB and 16GB models will be available next month for about $130 and $160, respectively.

sony_e_series_walkmanThe E Series is similar but some of the features have been cut back. It lacks the external speakers and  has a smaller screen, 2 inches rather than 2.4. The battery also doesn’t last quite as long, up to 30 hours of music playback and approximately up to 4 hours of video playback.  Maybe the E stands for “economy”?

The new Sony E Series Walkman® Video MP3 player will be available in black, red and violet colours and in capacities of 8 GB and 16 GB.  Both the 8GB and 16GB models will be available next month for about $100 and $130, respectively.
