• Ubisoft’s DRM Makes PC Assassin’s Creed II Unplayable

Want to play Assassin’s Creed II on your PC today? Sorry buddy, but you’re out of luck. Ubisoft’s software authentication servers are down and that’s frustrating gamers.

Players who have posted in Ubisoft’s technical help forum are very angry that the digital rights management that requires the game to check in online is broken. Poster sting_0109 wrote “I know that there is isn’t a cracked version of AC2 right now, but there is for SH5 so please take note Ubi, your loyal customers are now unable to play your game whilst those who have obtained it for FREE are perfectly fine.”

To date Ubisoft’s management has not issued a formal statement leaving forum moderators to deal with outraged consumers.

“Due to exceptional demand, we are currently experiencing difficulties with the Online Service Platform. This does not affect customers who are currently playing, but customers attempting to start a game may experience difficulty in accessing our servers. We are currently working to resolve this issue and apologize for any inconvenience.”

But when news came out that Ubisoft was implementing DRM on its games that required a constant Internet connection, the negative reaction by gamers was predictable. Despite Ubisoft touting the fact that games could be played on any computer because game saves were stored online, many predicted major problems. Members of the military pointed out they often did not have access to the Internet, and cruise ship employees said paying for Internet aboard a ship at seas was ridiculously expensive. Even those with access to the Internet indicated their connection wasn’t always constant.

Hopefully, Ubisoft is able to clear this up and allow everyone to get back to their assassinating activities quickly. But there is little doubt that some will think twice before buying another Ubisoft game.
